Acura CL I (YA1/YA2) gallery (1996–1999)

Introduced in 1996 for the 1997 model year, the first-generation Acura CL (YA1/YA2 chassis) was the first Acura vehicle designed, engineered, and manufactured in North America. Built on an adapted Honda Accord platform featuring independent double-wishbone suspension at both axles, the front-wheel drive luxury coupe offered a smooth ride, elegant styling, and a well-appointed interior featuring leather seating, power moonroof, and automatic climate control. Engineering priorities for this generation focused on structural rigidity, chassis refinement, and elevating active safety capabilities.

Engine options initially included the 2.2CL powered by a 145-horsepower 2.2-liter F22B1 four-cylinder and the 3.0CL powered by a 200-horsepower 3.0-liter J30A1 V6. The four-cylinder was updated to a 2.3-liter F23A1 (150 hp) for 1998. Transmissions were a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic for 4-cylinder models, while the V6 model came strictly with a 4-speed automatic transmission. A comprehensive list of standard features combined with proven powertrain durability helped secure a strong market presence in its segment.
