Toyota Will Release Production Fuel Cell Model at 2013 Tokyo Auto Show
Japanese hydrogen fuel-cell model will make its premiere at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show prior to be delivered as a 2015 model later next year.
While hydrogen fuel-cell models haven’t exactly gained a ton of favorable attention in recent years, Toyota hopes to defy sceptics much like it did when the Japanese brand first released the Prius hybrid. But it’ll be a real challenge for Toyota, especially when Tesla CEO Elon Musk assumes “fuel cells should be renamed ‘fool cells,’ they are so dumb.”
The brand hasn’t unveiled many details on its hydrogen fuel-cell model, other than the fact that it’ll be delivered as a Lexus model in America and will be priced about $50,000. Toyota wants to stay competitive versus the successful Tesla Model S, and estimates that it will go around 300 miles per refuel.
