Kia Introduces the Tasman Weekender: A Robust Competitor to the Raptor

Kia has unveiled its Tasman Weekender concept, presenting a formidable challenge to Ford's Ranger Raptor. Debuting at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show, this rugged pickup boasts a distinctive, angular design reminiscent of oversized Lego Technic models.

One of the standout features is the Weekender's wide, body-colored fenders, which enhance its overall silhouette and address previous design criticisms. Mounted on hefty 35-inch BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, the truck is engineered for serious off-road performance.

Enhanced Off-Road Capabilities

The Tasman Weekender offers an improved approach angle thanks to the redesigned front bumper with trimmed corners. Additional off-road enhancements include a sturdy winch, robust grab handles on the B-pillars, and a spacious rear storage box. While a snorkel isn't standard, it's available as an official accessory for the production version.

Refined Front Design

Subtle modifications at the front end feature headlights integrated more seamlessly into the vehicle's body, aided by the larger fenders and new black plastic trim. This not only improves the truck's proportions but also minimizes the risk of headlight damage during off-road adventures.

Performance and Availability

Despite its quirky aesthetics, the lifted Weekender concept signals a positive direction for Kia's pickup lineup. Currently powered by a 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine producing 207 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, the vehicle may see stronger engine options in the future. Alternative powertrains include a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with 277 hp and 311 lb-ft, although a V-6 option is unlikely due to stricter emission standards.

Kia CEO Ho Sung Song has confirmed that while a new truck is in the works for the U.S. market, it will differ from the Tasman. Further details are expected to be revealed on April 9 during Kia’s upcoming Investor Day.
