Testing of BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid Tech
BMW made a prior review of its plug-in hybrid tech.
The German producer presented concept of the 2 Series Active Tourer which is a hybrid plug-in as one of this year’s company’s Group Innovation Days. The concept is equipped with a 3-cylinder petrol engine and front wheel drive system. At the same time, an electric motor powers the wheels on the back. Sounds familiar enough? Yes, since the BMW i8 has an alike, though revised, powerplant layout. Therefore, this means that the model under consideration has four-wheel drive system linked to road. It also can show how versatile the automaker’s eDrive technology is.
The producer announced that the BMW X5 xDrive40e will be its first production plug-in hybrid offering. This model will be followed by the 3 Series with plug-in hybrid tech. It is pleasant that more offerings will follow it.
Speaking about concept of the 2 Series Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid, it will ride with the turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine. This engine produces 136 hp and torque of 162. It is joined to a 6-speed Steptronic gear box. The electric motor is placed behind the rear axle. It is able to sent 88 hp and torque of 122 lb-ft to the rear wheels. In such a way, the car can accelerate 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds. Its fully electric range is 23.6 miles (or 38 km) on the EU testing cycle.
The German automaker has announced that the 2 Series Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid will be produced in the line of existing engine options with comparable power numbers. This is just as they did with the electrified variants of the BMW 3 Series and BMW X5.
