FWD for Next-Gen BMW 1-Series and 2-Series
According to the latest report from Auto Bild, the BMW 1-Series and 2-Series will go to a front-wheel drive lay-out for their next-gen.
It is a surprise that the producer is switching the 2-Series to a front-wheel drive. The changing process is happening with the 2-Series Gran Tourer and Active Tourer MPVs. These cars are equipped with the FWD UKL platform. By the way, the vehicles share it with the new X1. Moreover, the coming-soon 1-Series Sedan intended for China will also ride with a regular FWD layout.
The information about more FWD models based on a MINI will not gladden the purists. Though, it looks like the brand wants to produce its entry-level offerings FWD with the chance of receiving optional xDrive. We wonder if these new offerings with FWD will get performance focused versions with the lapse of time.
We’ll have to wait a while until the 1-Series and 2-Series receive new generation since the previous one got a facelift not long ago. Meanwhile the latter was out in 2014. The RWD 2-series Coupe will probably give life to a Gran Coupe variant expected in four years. Though, the manufacturer has not confirmed this fact yet.
