Hyundai and GM Collaborate on New Pickup Using Chevy Colorado Chassis
Last year, General Motors and Hyundai announced a collaboration to design and manufacture a variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and vans, aiming for an annual output exceeding 800,000 units. Their initial project, an electric van, is nearing release, and now details have emerged about their upcoming pickup truck.
According to information from GM Authority, the two automakers are developing a new mid-size pickup specifically for Central and South America. This truck will be built on the existing Chevrolet Colorado platform but will receive significant modifications to meet the unique demands of those regions.
The foundation for this vehicle is GM's GMT 31XX platform, introduced in the U.S. in 2022 alongside the latest Colorado. Notably, the Chevrolet S10 sold in countries like Brazil still uses an older platform, but this new model will upgrade to the modern chassis.
Enhancements include an updated rear axle designed to support higher payloads, as well as adaptations for diesel engines and single-cab configurations, both popular in Central and South American markets.
Production will take place at GM’s facility in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. The line-up will feature both an all-new Chevrolet S10 and Hyundai’s debut mid-size pickup, with both expected to launch around 2028.
Unfortunately, these vehicles are unlikely to be available in the U.S. market. The Chevrolet S10 will continue to be exclusive to Central and South America, and Hyundai's version will follow the same path. However, Hyundai has hinted at introducing a separate, striking body-on-frame pickup and a rugged SUV for the U.S. in the future.
