Could the Hyundai Ioniq 9 become the definitive family three-row SUV?
Three-row family SUVs are often written off as practical but uninspiring. Hyundai challenges that stereotype with the Ioniq 9, a vehicle that has earned finalist nods by delivering two striking takes on the three-row format.
Pros
- Rapid charging capabilities
- Bold, uncompromising design
- Engaging to drive
Cons
- Advanced driver aids require fine-tuning
- Not as efficient as some rivals
- Ride quality has a few rough edges
Three-row SUVs are often thought of as dull family movers. Hyundai proves otherwise at this year's SUV of the Year event, where the Ioniq 9 was praised for offering both practical family space and a bold, futuristic vibe. The Palisade remains traditional, but the Ioniq 9 demonstrates that Hyundai can blend family friendliness with modern, performance-focused design.
Visually, the Ioniq 9 stands out rather than blending in. It combines sleek aerodynamic curves with retro-futuristic blocky accents that look like an 8-bit inspired design. The look has won praise from editors for breaking the mold while still fitting into the Hyundai EV family.
Inside, the Ioniq 9 aims to match its exterior with a space-efficient three-row cabin. Exaggerated oval shapes, leather or cloth trim depending on trim, metallic accents, and piano-black surfaces create a roomy feel. The center console on higher trims slides forward and back, and there is a rearward drawer to pass items to the back row. Every row remains adult-friendly with a flat floor and easy third-row access.
Comfort centers on the Ioniq 9's E-GMP platform. Underneath sits a 113 kWh battery (110 kWh usable), with rear-wheel drive delivering about 215 hp or dual-motor all-wheel drive ranging from roughly 303 to 422 hp depending on the spec, plus 800-volt electrical architecture and a Tesla-style NACS charging port for rapid replenishment.
