Nissan Confirms Manual Transmission for the Z Nismo, and It Looks Incredible
When Nissan initially introduced the 2023 Z model, the high-performance Nismo edition was notably absent. Although Nissan corrected this by releasing the Nismo variant a year later, it was only offered with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Now, over three years since the Z's debut, Nissan is finally expanding the range with a manual transmission option for the Z Nismo.
The manual Z Nismo will make its first public appearance next month at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Nissan has already revealed some teaser photos showcasing the right-hand-drive version, clearly displaying the iconic round gear knob and a six-speed manual shift pattern.
This news aligns with earlier hints from Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier, who confirmed earlier this year that a manual transmission for the Nismo is on the way. While the exact release date wasn’t specified at the time, current indications suggest the manual Z Nismo will hit the U.S. market for the 2027 model year, potentially alongside a refreshed version of the sports car.
Nissan also announced that a redesigned Fairlady Z will be introduced in Japan this summer, featuring updated styling that enhances aerodynamic efficiency. Alongside this, the company will showcase a new Nismo concept vehicle at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
The upcoming facelift is expected to be modest, possibly including tweaks such as a new front fascia or a rear spoiler. Since 2027 marks the fifth year since the Z’s launch—typically a time for mid-cycle updates—it’s unlikely that major mechanical changes will be made, but minor adjustments are certainly possible.
The manual transmission will be paired with the Nismo’s potent twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine, which boasts an output of 420 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. This represents a boost of 20 hp and 34 lb-ft compared to the standard Z, now giving enthusiasts the chance to enjoy a more engaging driving experience by shifting themselves with this enhanced powertrain.
For those eager to experience a manual transmission Z before the Nismo manual arrives, the base Z model offers several trims—including the Sport, Performance, and the newly introduced Heritage Edition—that come with a six-speed manual gearbox.
