Kia Introduces the EV2 Prototype, Showcasing an Affordable and Quirky Electric Vehicle

Kia is advancing its electric vehicle lineup by exploring the near-term introduction of a budget-friendly model. The EV2 prototype offers a glimpse of the upcoming production version slated for release in Europe and other unspecified global markets. Its design blends elements of a compact hatchback with a miniature crossover, featuring short overhangs and extensive plastic body panels.

The compact EV2 is equipped with distinctive dual claw-like headlights and vertically oriented taillights positioned towards the edges. As a concept car, Kia has experimented with removing the B-pillars and incorporating rear-hinged doors to enhance entry and exit. However, it is anticipated that the 2026 production model will adopt a standard structure with conventional door handles.

Interior and Features

Staying true to concept design, the EV2 showcases a minimalist interior. Nevertheless, the production version is expected to retain more traditional dashboard elements. Kia, along with Hyundai, remains committed to incorporating physical controls in their vehicles, even in their modern EV offerings. The EV2 features a dual-screen arrangement, a trend seen in recent Kia models, and a single-spoke, octagonal steering wheel that provides clear visibility of the instrument cluster.

Potential highlights for the production model include foldable rear seats that create space for the front seats, which are mounted on sliding rails. Additionally, Kia has introduced removable triangular speakers that function as portable devices, pop-up sliding luggage dividers, a completely flat floor, and a panoramic glass roof.

Specifications and Market Placement

While Kia has not disclosed the technical details of the EV2, it is reasonable to assume that it is smaller than the EV3. The subcompact electric crossover measures 169.3 inches (4300 millimeters) in length, 72.8 inches (1850 millimeters) in width, and 61.4 inches (1560 millimeters) in height, with a wheelbase of 105.5 inches (2680 millimeters). Although the EV3 is set to debut in North America, the EV2 might not be available in this region.

The designation EV2 raises questions about the possibility of an even smaller EV1 serving as an electric successor to the Picanto city car. Kia has indicated that the EV2 falls within the B-segment category, suggesting there is potential space in their lineup for a more affordable electric model.
