AMG's Next-Generation Electric Super Sedan Set to Debut Soon

Mercedes-AMG is preparing to retire the legendary CLS 63, making room for a groundbreaking electric successor. This new four-door powerhouse, entirely developed as an electric vehicle, marks AMG's first foray into all-electric sedans and is expected to be unveiled in June. Prior to its official launch, a sneak peek has been released to stir excitement among enthusiasts.

Featuring a sleek, coupe-like roof reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan, the upcoming sedan hints at an elongated design while maintaining practicality with visible rear doors. Camouflaged prototype images reveal a functional four-door silhouette, though it's yet to be determined whether it retains the liftback style of its gasoline predecessor or adopts a traditional sedan form. Initially showcased in 2022 through the Vision AMG concept, the electric sedan presents a fresh aesthetic distinct from the seven-year-old V8 model.

Boasting four doors, an extended front end, and a spacious rear, this sedan is poised to be sizable. The prototype showcases a commanding presence with a low stance, but plans are also in motion for an SUV variant with elevated suspension. Both models will utilize the AMG.EA platform, designed in-house to ensure exhilarating electric driving experiences.

Powering the sedan are YASA’s axial-flux motors, delivering 480 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque while being significantly lighter than traditional radial-flux counterparts. A single motor on each axle could provide an all-wheel-drive system nearing 1,000 horsepower and exceeding 1,000 lb-ft of torque, positioning it against rivals like the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Audi RS E-Tron GT. However, dual motors do not necessarily guarantee AWD, as seen in the One-Eleven supercar concept's rear-wheel-drive setup.

Weight remains a consideration, especially when compared to the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which already weighs in at 5,269 pounds with its plug-in hybrid V8. The electric variant's weight is expected to be similar or potentially less challenging than its predecessor. Additionally, the sedan’s aerodynamic design should enhance its range compared to the anticipated SUV counterpart.

Mercedes-AMG Vision AMG Concept Insights

Beyond specifications, AMG faces the challenge of balancing tradition with innovation. Purists may prefer the roar of a large-displacement engine over the quiet efficiency of an electric drivetrain. Instant torque from an EV offers rapid acceleration, but sustaining an engaging driving experience remains a concern.

The recent C63 model's shift from a V8 to a complex four-cylinder hybrid has not been well-received, raising questions about the future without internal combustion engines (ICE). Eliminating the ICE entirely could strip AMG of its characteristic spirit. However, there's hope that the new electric sedan will attract buyers, providing Mercedes with the resources to continue developing their beloved V8 engines as promised.
