Ford's Shift Towards Iconic Vehicles: Goodbye to Boring Cars

Out with the Old, In with the Iconic

Ford's decision to discontinue the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus raised eyebrows, but CEO Jim Farley is firm in his stance. The company wants to leave behind the 'boring-car business' and focus on creating iconic vehicles that make a statement. Farley acknowledges the popularity of the Fiesta, Focus, and Mondeo, but insists that investing more in commercial vehicles and electric SUVs is a wiser choice.

The Future of Ford: Electric SUVs and Enthusiast Vehicles

Ford doesn't have direct replacements planned for the discontinued models. Instead, they aim to make an impact with Volkswagen-based electric SUVs like the Explorer and Capri, as well as an electric variant of the successful Puma crossover. However, the real focus will be on the 'iconic' vehicles, such as the Bronco, Mustang, and Raptor. Ford believes these vehicles have the potential to compete with the likes of Porsche, leading to increased investment in their development.

Competitors Take Advantage of Ford's Shift

While Ford is moving away from regular passenger cars, competitors like the Volkswagen Group, Toyota, Stellantis, and Kia/Hyundai continue to manufacture them. Ford's sales in Europe have already seen a decline, which may be attributed to their limited passenger car lineup. By excluding the Focus from their plans and relying on niche products like the Mustang, Ford risks losing market share and potential profits.
