First generation of the landmark Volvo 850 front-wheel-drive executive series produced from 1991 to 1996.

The Volvo 850 launched in June 1991 featuring four world-first innovations. Built on a front-wheel-drive platform, it was produced in 4-door sedan (854) and 5-door wagon (855) body styles. Key innovations included transverse 5-cylinder engines, Delta-link rear axle suspension, the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), and self-adjusting front seat belts.

Powertrains comprised 5-cylinder petrol engines in 2.0, 2.3, and 2.5-liter Tunes (including legendary T-5, T-5R, and 250 hp R high-performance models) and an Audi 2.5 TDI diesel. An 850 AWD variant debuted in 1996. The 850 Estate gained motorsport fame in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) before being rebranded as the S70 and V70.
