Volvo 740 I (740) gallery (1984–1992)

First generation of the Volvo 740 executive car family (sedan and wagon) produced from 1984 to 1992.

The Volvo 740 series debuted in 1984 as a four-cylinder alternative to the upscale 760 flagship. Produced in 4-door sedan and 5-door wagon body styles, it featured Jan Wilsgaard's iconic boxy styling, near-vertical rear window angles, and extensive galvanized steel body protection.

Engine choices featured B200 and B230 four-cylinder petrol engines (including 16-valve Turbo variants up to 200 hp) and Volkswagen-sourced D24/D24T six-cylinder diesels. Front-end refreshes in 1989 and 1990 brought aerodynamic headlights and flush grilles before yielding to the 940 series in 1992.
