First generation of the Volvo 480 front-wheel-drive sports hatchback with pop-up headlights produced from 1986 to 1995.
The Volvo 480 sports coupe debuted at the 1986 Geneva Motor Show as Volvo's first front-wheel-drive production vehicle. Manufactured as a 3-door hatchback, it stood out with pop-up headlights, a low-slung wedge profile, and a glass tailgate reminiscent of the 1800 ES. Suspension tuning was engineered in collaboration with Lotus.
Power was delivered by 1.7-liter naturally aspirated and Turbo (120 hp) petrol engines, supplemented later by a 2.0-liter unit. Approximately 76,000 units were built during its production run, laying the mechanical groundwork for the 440 and 460 models.
