First generation of the Volvo 460 front-wheel-drive sedan built on the 440 platform from 1989 to 1996.

The Volvo 460 4-door sedan debuted in 1989 as the notchback sedan counterpart to the 440 hatchback. Manufactured at the NedCar plant in the Netherlands, it was produced as a 4-door sedan targeted at traditional saloon car buyers with a distinct chrome grille and elongated trunk profile.

Powertrains mirrored the 440, featuring 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, and 2.0-liter petrol engines (including 1.7 Turbo) and a 1.9-liter turbodiesel. A 1993 Phase II redesign brought unified headlight-grille treatment, smooth body cladding, and safety structure upgrades.
