First generation of the Volvo 440 front-wheel-drive 5-door hatchback produced from 1988 to 1996.
The Volvo 440 5-door hatchback premiered in 1988 as part of the front-wheel-drive 400 Series. Assembled at the NedCar facility in Born, Netherlands, it was produced as a 5-door hatchback sharing its platform with the 480 coupe and 460 sedan.
Engines included 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, and 2.0-liter Renault four-cylinder petrol engines (featuring a 120 hp 1.7 Turbo variant) alongside a 1.9-liter Renault turbodiesel. A major Phase II update in 1993 refreshed the bonnet grille, headlights, and body-colored bumpers to align with 850 styling.
