The Volvo 360 was introduced as a distinct model designation in autumn 1982 to highlight high-spec 2.0-liter versions of the 300 Series. Built in the Netherlands, it was produced as a 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, and 4-door sedan. It retained the rear-wheel-drive layout with a De Dion rear axle and balanced weight distribution.

Powered exclusively by Swedish-built 2.0-liter Volvo B19 and B200 engines (carbureted B200K and fuel-injected B200E/F up to 118 hp) mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the lineup was headed by the sporty 360 GLT trim. A 1985 update refreshed exterior bumper moldings.
