First generation of the Volvo 340 compact rear-wheel-drive family car produced in the Netherlands from 1976 to 1991.
The Volvo 340 series launched in 1976 (originally as the 343 3-door hatchback) at the former DAF factory in Born, Netherlands. Originating from the DAF 77 project, it featured a rear-wheel-drive layout with a transaxle gearbox location and optional Variomatic continuous variable transmission (CVT). Body styles included 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, and a 4-door sedan added in 1983.
Powertrains comprised Renault-sourced 1.4 and 1.7-liter petrol engines, Volvo's 2.0-liter B19/B200 engines, and a 1.6-liter Renault diesel. Facelifts in 1981 and 1984 modernized the front grille, bumpers, and interior layout. Over 1.1 million 300-series models were produced.
