The Volvo 240 series was introduced in August 1974 as an evolution of the 140 series. Incorporating MacPherson strut front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and enlarged crumple zones, it was offered as a 2-door sedan (242), 4-door sedan (244), and 5-door wagon (245), unified under the single Volvo 240 badge from 1983 onward.

Engine choices spanned B20, B21, B23, B200, and B230 four-cylinder petrol engines (including 240 Turbo models) and a Volkswagen-sourced D24 six-cylinder diesel. Widely regarded as a benchmark for automotive safety engineering, over 2.8 million units were produced across 19 model years.
