Volvo 164 I (164) gallery (1968–1975)

First generation of the Volvo 164 luxury six-cylinder executive saloon produced from 1968 to 1975.

The Volvo 164 flagship saloon premiered in 1968 as Volvo's premier 6-cylinder executive model. Built on an extended front-end chassis of the 140 series, it was produced as a 4-door sedan. It featured a distinctive upright front grille, plush leather upholstery, and standard power steering.

Powered by a 3.0-liter B30 inline-six engine (130-160 hp) with dual Stromberg carburetors or Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection (164 E), it delivered smooth performance. A 1973 update added safety bumpers and a redesigned instrument panel. Over 146,000 units were produced before being succeeded by the 260 series.
