The Volkswagen Type 4 (411/412) was the brand's flagship air-cooled passenger car produced from 1968 to 1974.
The Volkswagen Type 4 family with body code Typ 4 comprised the 411 (1968–1972) and 412 (1972–1974) models. Positioned as Volkswagen's largest air-cooled vehicle, it broke ground as the company's first model featuring unitized unibody construction. The chassis incorporated a MacPherson strut front suspension and a trailing-arm rear setup. Body styles included two-door and four-door sedans alongside a three-door Variant station wagon.
Powering the Type 4 were air-cooled 1.7-liter and 1.8-liter flat-four engines equipped with twin carburetors or Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection, producing up to 85 hp. Gearboxes included a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic. The 1972 facelift introduced updated front styling with twin round headlamps under the 412 model name.
