The Volkswagen Type 3 (1500/1600) was a family of air-cooled rear-engined cars manufactured from 1961 to 1973.
The Volkswagen Type 3 compact car family (internal designation Typ 3) was manufactured from 1961 through 1973, marketed under the Volkswagen 1500 and 1600 names. Designed as a premium complement to the Type 1 Beetle, the Type 3 introduced a low-profile air-cooled 'pancake' engine packaged beneath the rear cargo floor, creating dual luggage compartments in both front and rear. Body options included a two-door Notchback sedan, a Fastback coupe, and a highly popular Variant/Squareback wagon.
Powertrains comprised 1.5-liter and 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four engines delivering 45 hp to 54 hp. In 1968, the Type 3 pioneered the use of electronic fuel injection in mass production with the Bosch D-Jetronic system. Transmissions included a four-speed manual and a three-speed automatic, operating alongside torsion-bar independent suspension.
