The Volkswagen Touareg II (Typ 7P) was revealed in Munich in February 2010. Constructed on the updated PL72 platform, it shed roughly 200 kg while improving body rigidity and aerodynamic efficiency. The exterior showcased refined corporate styling lines. All trim levels received an 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission as standard equipment.

All-wheel drive was offered as a Torsen-based 4Motion system or an off-road 4XMotion package featuring low-range transfer gearing. Engine options encompassed 3.6 V6 FSI, 4.2 V8 FSI, 3.0 TSI Hybrid, and turbodiesels ranging from 3.0 V6 TDI to a monstrous 4.2 V8 TDI generating 800 Nm of torque.
