The Volkswagen Routan full-size minivan with body code RT was manufactured from 2008 through 2014 specifically for North American buyers. Developed as a joint venture with Chrysler, the Routan was constructed on Chrysler's RT platform alongside the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country. Volkswagen revised the exterior front and rear styling, tuned the steering and suspension damping for a firmer ride, and modified the dashboard layout.

Engine selections initially featured Chrysler V6 engines, including a 3.8-liter unit and a 4.0-liter SOHC V6. For the 2011 model year, these were replaced by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 producing 283 horsepower. All engines were mated to a six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Key features included power-sliding doors, dual-screen rear entertainment, and versatile seating arrangements.
