The Volkswagen Lupo (Typ 6X) premiered in October 1998 as VW's smallest city car (measuring just 3.53 meters long). Underpinned by the A00 platform shared with the SEAT Arosa, the three-door hatchback featured round headlamps. In 1999, VW launched the record-breaking Lupo 3L TDI featuring lightweight aluminum hood and doors alongside a 1.2 TDI engine averaging 2.99 L/100 km.
Engine choices included 1.0 to 1.4-liter petrols, a high-revving 125 hp Lupo GTI 1.6 16V, and 1.2/1.4 TDI diesels.
