The Volkswagen Kübelwagen light military utility vehicle with internal code Typ 82 was manufactured from 1940 through 1945. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche using the mechanical foundation of the Kdf-Wagen (later the Beetle), the Typ 82 featured a ribbed sheet-metal body, flat underbody protection, portal self-locking rear axle gearboxes, and a ZF self-locking differential for high ground clearance and off-road mobility.

Powering the Kübelwagen was a rear-mounted 1.0-liter (later upgraded to 1.1-liter) air-cooled flat-four engine producing 23.5 hp to 25 hp, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Over 50,000 units were produced, demonstrating exceptional mechanical reliability across severe environments.
