The Volkswagen Iltis military and civilian off-road vehicle with body code Typ 183 was built from 1978 to 1988. Developed for the German Bundeswehr using components derived from the DKW Munga, its four-wheel-drive technology directly inspired Audi's permanent quattro system. The Iltis achieved motorsport fame by winning the overall title in the 1980 Paris-Dakar Rally.

Engine choices included a 1.7-liter gasoline four-cylinder (75 hp) and a 1.6-liter turbodiesel (70 hp). The drivetrain featured a five-speed manual transmission with a low-range crawler gear, selectable front-wheel drive, and mechanical differential locks. The body featured a simplified open-tub steel construction with removable soft-top panels.
