The Volkswagen Corrado (Typ 53i) was launched in late 1988 as a high-end 2+2 sports coupe manufactured at Karmann in Osnabrück using A2 platform architecture. Notable engineering features included an active rear spoiler that automatically deployed at speeds above 120 km/h.
Engines featured the supercharged 1.8 G60 (160 hp), 2.0 16V, and 2.8/2.9-liter VR6 engines producing up to 190 hp. Total Karmann production reached 97,521 units.
