The first-generation Volkswagen Atlas mid-size/full-size crossover with body code CA debuted in late 2016 and went on sale for the 2018 model year. Developed primarily for North American buyers, the Atlas is manufactured at Volkswagen's assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Utilizing the flexible MQB platform, it represented the largest vehicle built by Volkswagen at its launch. The interior features a practical three-row layout accommodating seven passengers, extensive cargo room, and user-friendly technology interfaces.

Initial Atlas models were powered by a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder turbocharged engine or an optional 3.6-liter VR6 engine, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard on base models, with 4Motion all-wheel drive available across the range. A five-seat coupe-styled variant named the Atlas Cross Sport joined the lineup in 2020. A major update for the 2024 model year introduced a redesigned cabin with elevated luxury touches and made a higher-output 2.0-liter TSI engine standard across all trims.
