The VAZ-2106 is a classic rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan that became one of the most widely produced Soviet and Russian passenger cars.
The VAZ-2106 four-door sedan entered serial production in 1976 as a refined and upgraded successor to the upscale VAZ-2103 model within the classic Lada lineup. Built on the rear-wheel-drive platform with coil-sprung suspension, it featured distinctive exterior styling updates including twin round headlights surrounded by dark plastic bezels, new integrated tail lamps, and updated chrome side moldings. The hallmark of the vehicle was its new 1.6-liter four-cylinder overhead-cam carbureted engine producing 75 horsepower, making it the most powerful and fastest production car in the domestic market at the time. Other popular variants utilized 1.3-liter (21063) and 1.5-liter (21061) powerplants mated to 4-speed or 5-speed manual gearboxes. The cabin offered enhanced comfort, rich velour or leatherette upholstery, inertia seatbelts, upgraded sound insulation, and a detailed instrument cluster including a tachometer and analog clock. The car was exported internationally as the Lada 1600. Production spanned three full decades across Togliatti, Syzran, and Izhevsk, finally coming to an end in 2006.
