The first-generation Vauxhall VXR8 debuted in 2007 as a direct successor to the Monaro, based on the Australian HSV Clubsport R8 and GTS underpinned by General Motors' rear-wheel-drive Zeta architecture. Under the bonnet, the muscle saloon initially featured GM's naturally aspirated 6.0-litre LS2 V8 producing 417 bhp, which was subsequently updated in 2008 to the larger 6.2-litre LS3 V8 delivering 431 bhp. Power was sent to the rear wheels via a standard Tremec six-speed manual gearbox or an optional six-speed automatic transmission with a mechanical limited-slip differential. Along with the traditional four-door saloon, Vauxhall offered a limited run of the VXR8 Maloo, a two-door performance ute. An extensive mid-life facelift in 2010 brought sharper exterior styling, aggressive front air intakes, updated LED lighting, and adaptive Magnetic Ride Control suspension dampers. The model was sold exclusively in the UK market as an accessible, high-powered alternative to established German sports sedans until its discontinuation in 2013.
