Introduced in 2003, the Vauxhall Meriva (A) was a five-door subcompact MPV engineered on the GM Gamma platform shared with the Corsa C. It pioneered the innovative FlexSpace interior layout, allowing the rear seats to slide, fold flat into the floor, or adjust inwards to convert the five-seat layout into a luxurious four-seater without removing any hardware. The engine portfolio included 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8-litre naturally aspirated Ecotec petrol units, as well as a range-topping 180 hp 1.6-litre Turbo powering the sporty Meriva VXR. Diesel offerings featured a frugal 1.3-litre CDTi alongside punchy 1.7-litre DTI and CDTi powerplants. Transmission choices spanned five- and six-speed manuals and the Easytronic automated manual gearbox. A 2006 facelift refreshed the front bumper, grille chrome trim, and rear light clusters while bringing revised, cleaner engines to British dealerships.
