Debuting in late 2005, the second-generation Suzuki Grand Vitara (JT platform) featured a mono-frame design incorporating an integrated steel ladder chassis with independent multi-link rear suspension. The drivetrain evolved into a permanent full-time four-wheel-drive system operated by a center console rotary switch selecting between 4H, 4H Lock, and 4L Lock low-range modes.

Engine offerings initially included 1.6-liter (106 hp), 2.0-liter (140 hp), and 2.7-liter V6 (185 hp) gasoline units, alongside a 1.9-liter Renault-sourced DDiS turbodiesel engine. A major mechanical upgrade in 2008 brought revised 2.4-liter inline-four (169 hp) and 3.2-liter V6 (233 hp) engines with VVT technology, four-wheel disc brakes, and subtle bumper styling changes. A second cosmetic update in 2012 refreshed the front grille and wheel options.
