The Subaru Vivio supermini was produced from 1992 to 1998, famous for its Safari Rally performance driven by Colin McRae.
Produced from 1992 to 1998, the sole generation of the Subaru Vivio (KK hatchback, KW van, KY T-Top targa) succeeded the Subaru Rex. Featuring a low center of gravity and 4-wheel independent suspension, it was powered by 658 cc EN07 4-cylinder engines in naturally aspirated (42–52 hp) and supercharged (64 hp in RX-R / RX-RA trims) configurations. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
In 1993, Colin McRae drove a Vivio Supercharger to a remarkable 4th-place overall finish at the grueling WRC Safari Rally. A 1995 facelift updated the front fascia. A limited-run T-Top targa/cabriolet version was offered in 1994 before Vivio production ended in 1998. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
