Subaru SVX I (CX) gallery (1991–1996)

Produced from 1991 to 1996, the sole generation of the Subaru SVX (marketed as Alcyone SVX in Japan under the CX code) served as Subaru's flagship luxury performance coupe. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, its aircraft-inspired canopy featured distinctive 'window-in-window' side glass. Propulsion was delivered by a 3.3-liter EG33 naturally aspirated flat-six engine generating 230 hp and 309 Nm of torque. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

To handle the engine's output, the SVX was offered exclusively with a 4-speed automatic transmission connected to advanced Symmetrical AWD systems (VTD or Active Torque Split), while Japanese-market models offered four-wheel steering (AWS). Production ended in December 1996 with a total run of 24,347 units. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
