The first generation of the SsangYong Rodius large minivan debuted in 2004 and became famous for its controversial exterior design penned by Ken Greenley. The vehicle was built on a ladder-frame platform sharing components with the SsangYong Chairman luxury sedan, offering a massive interior layout configured for 7, 9, or 11 seats. Under the hood, it featured licensed Mercedes-Benz 2.7-liter diesel engines as well as rare gasoline power units. Transmission choices included manual gearboxes and five-speed T-Tronic automatic transmissions. The model was offered with either rear-wheel drive or a part-time four-wheel-drive system. In 2007, the vehicle underwent a minor modernization affecting interior trim and available equipment. The main markets for the Rodius were South Korea, Europe, and Asia, where buyers valued the model for its exceptional passenger capacity and utility at a competitive price point.
