Debuting in 2014, the third-generation smart Fortwo (internal designation W453) was engineered on the shared rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive Edison platform developed in partnership between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Retaining its compact 2.69-meter overall length while expanding 100 millimeters in width, the vehicle offered substantially improved highway stability, upgraded cabin acoustics, and an unmatched curb-to-curb turning radius of just 6.95 meters. Available body styles included the two-door coupe and cabriolet. Initial combustion powertrains comprised a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder unit making 71 hp and a 0.9-liter turbocharged engine generating 90 hp (109 hp for Brabus). Transmission options finally included a five-speed manual alongside a responsive Getrag six-speed dual-clutch automatic (Twinamic). Following a mid-cycle facelift in late 2019, smart phased out all internal combustion engines, updating front-end styling and continuing production strictly as the pure electric smart EQ Fortwo with an 82 hp motor until final retirement in 2024.
