Manufactured between 2004 and 2006 at the NedCar facility in the Netherlands, the first-generation smart Forfour (W454) expanded the brand into the competitive B-segment subcompact category. Unlike the micro Fortwo, the original Forfour utilized a conventional front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout sharing approximately forty percent of its components and platform with the contemporary Mitsubishi Colt. The exterior carried smart’s distinctive two-tone styling cue, exposing the steel Tridion safety cell contrasted against interchangeable composite body panels. Inside, the vehicle offered flexible seating with sliding rear benches. Powertrain options consisted of all-aluminum petrol engines displacing 1.1 liters (75 hp), 1.3 liters (95 hp), and 1.5 liters (109 hp), topped by a high-performance 177-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged Brabus variant. Common-rail 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel engines were also offered with 68 or 95 hp. Transmissions included a standard 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automated manual gearbox.
