Saab 9-5 I (YS3E) gallery (1997–2010)

Introduced in 1997 as the successor to the iconic Saab 9000, the first-generation Saab 9-5 served as the brand's executive flagship based on an extensively reworked GM2900 platform. Initially launched as a 4-door notchback sedan, the lineup was expanded in 1998 with a versatile 5-door SportCombi station wagon. The 9-5 set high automotive benchmarks for crash protection, pioneering the Saab Active Head Restraint (SAHR) technology. Powertrain choices included proprietary 2.0-liter (B205) and 2.3-liter (B235) turbocharged inline-four engines, including high-output Aero specifications, alongside an asymmetric low-pressure turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The diesel range evolved from 2.2 TiD and 3.0-liter V6 TiD units to the efficient 1.9-liter TiD four-cylinder. Saab also pioneered flex-fuel capability with its popular BioPower E85 engines. Gearbox options comprised 5-speed manuals and 4- or 5-speed Aisin automatics. The model received two major facelifts: the first in 2001 with integrated bumpers, and a more dramatic revision in 2005 featuring distinctive chrome headlamp surrounds. It was sold across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia.
