About this generation

The second-generation Saab 9-5 was the marque's final flagship executive sedan, featuring Aero X-inspired design and cutting-edge platform architecture.

Unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the second-generation Saab 9-5 entered production in 2010 as the brand's ultimate executive flagship. Built on the long-wheelbase GM Epsilon II platform shared with the Opel Insignia, the car showcased progressive Scandinavian styling influenced by the Aero X concept, characterized by wraparound aircraft-inspired glasshouse graphics and an ice-block full-width rear light bar. While primarily manufactured as a 4-door sedan, a limited pre-production batch of SportCombi wagons was also completed. The powertrain range encompassed turbocharged 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter BioPower four-cylinder engines, topped by an exhilarating 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 generating 300 hp in the Aero variant. Diesel offerings consisted of 2.0-liter TiD and twin-turbo TTiD units. Transmissions were 6-speed manuals or 6-speed automatics. Advanced technologies included DriveSense adaptive chassis control, head-up display, and Saab XWD intelligent all-wheel drive with eLSD. Sold in Europe and North America, production ceased prematurely in early 2012 following Saab's financial collapse.
