Launched in 2002, the second-generation Saab 9-3 represented a major technological shift, transitioning to the GM Epsilon platform. Saab departed from its traditional hatchback configuration, offering the 9-3 as a four-door SportSedan, a two-door Convertible, and starting in 2005, a five-door SportCombi station wagon. The chassis incorporated the innovative ReAxs passive rear-wheel steering system, which significantly improved cornering stability and driving dynamics. The powertrain roster included all-aluminum 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Ecotec engines managed by Saab Trionic 8, a 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 for top-tier Aero trims, and efficient 1.9-liter TiD and twin-turbo TTiD diesel units. Environmentally friendly BioPower versions capable of running on E85 ethanol were widely offered. Gearboxes included 5- and 6-speed manuals as well as 5- and 6-speed automatics. A major facelift in 2007 brought aggressive front-end styling inspired by the Aero X concept and introduced the advanced Saab XWD all-wheel-drive system with an active rear limited-slip differential (eLSD). The car was sold globally, with a brief production revival by NEVS in Trollhättan during 2013–2014.
