Saab 9-3 I (YS3D) gallery (1998–2003)

The first-generation Saab 9-3 was introduced in 1998 as a comprehensive evolution of the Saab 900 NG, based on the GM2900 platform. Saab engineers implemented more than one thousand structural and mechanical modifications to improve refinement, handling, and passive safety. The model was offered as a 3-door hatchback (often referred to as a coupe), a 5-door hatchback, and a 2-door convertible. Compared to its predecessor, it gained a stiffer chassis, modified suspension geometry, revised steering, and the innovative Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR). The powertrain lineup featured Saab's famous turbocharged 2.0-liter B204 and B205 four-cylinder engines, alongside a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter base unit and the high-performance 2.3-liter B235R powering the range-topping Viggen edition. A 2.2-liter TiD turbodiesel sourced from Opel was also introduced. Transmissions included a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The vehicle was marketed globally across Europe, North America, and other select markets, earning a loyal following for its distinct Swedish styling, aircraft-inspired cockpit ergonomics, and high safety standards.
