The second generation adopted a more traditional design and transitioned to an updated U-body platform.
The second generation Pontiac Trans Sport was introduced for the 1997 model year, moving away from the controversial 'Dustbuster' look to adopt a more traditional, aerodynamic minivan profile styled similarly to its market competitors. Built on the revised GMT200 U-body platform, it offered standard and extended wheelbase configurations with flexible multi-door access configurations and improved interior packaging. Under the hood, the vehicle relied exclusively on a 3.4-liter V6 gasoline engine delivering 180 horsepower, mated to a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission. This generation improved safety features, structural rigidity, interior ergonomics, and ride comfort compared to the first iteration. It was marketed in North America and select international regions until production wrapped up in 1999, as General Motors rebranded the line into the Pontiac Montana moniker to better align with changing customer preferences and marketing strategies.
