The second generation of the compact Pontiac Sunfire was produced from 2000 to 2005 on the upgraded GM J-body platform and was offered in coupe and sedan body styles. The car retained its core architecture shared with the Chevrolet Cavalier but featured a more aggressive and sporty Pontiac-specific exterior design characterized by a split grille and pronounced plastic body cladding. Throughout its production run, the model underwent two notable facelifts: an initial update in 2000 brought redesigned bumpers and a revised instrument cluster, while a major refresh in 2003 streamlined the front and rear fascias for a cleaner look. The engine lineup featured traditional 2200 powerplants, the sporty 2.4L Twin Cam, and later the modern 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine producing 140 horsepower. Transmission choices included a 5-speed manual alongside 3-speed and 4-speed automatic gearboxes. The primary target markets were North America, encompassing the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the US market transitioning to a coupe-only lineup in its final years, while sedans remained available in Canada until production ended in 2005.
