Pontiac Sunbird II (J-body) gallery (1982–1994)

The second generation transitioned to the front-wheel-drive J-body platform and was produced under the Sunbird name from 1982 to 1994.

The second generation of the Pontiac Sunbird marked a complete engineering shift to General Motors' front-wheel-drive J-body platform. Initially marketed as the J2000 and simply 2000 between 1982 and 1984, the vehicle officially adopted the Sunbird moniker for the 1985 model year and continued production through 1994. It featured an extensive array of body styles, consisting of a two-door coupe, four-door sedan, station wagon, three-door hatchback, and a stylish convertible. Engine offerings ranged from economical 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter inline-four engines (including turbocharged high-output variants) to a responsive 3.1-liter V6 featured in high-performance GT trims. Transmission choices featured manual five-speed gearboxes and three- or four-speed automatic units. Throughout its long production run, the Sunbird received major updates and facelifts in 1988 and 1991, which revised front and rear fascia designs, upgraded interior dashboards, and enhanced safety equipment. It was a core volume seller for Pontiac in North America until it was officially replaced by the Pontiac Sunfire for the 1995 model year.
