The GTO I (Z16A) vehicle generation was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1990 to 2000 and offered in coupe body configurations.
The Mitsubishi GTO (Z15A and Z16A chassis series) launched in Japan in October 1990 as the domestic counterpart to the 3000GT. Featuring high-tech standard features, it was built as a heavy-duty GT coupe. Engineering of the GTO I (Z16A) (factory code Z16A) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. Powered by a 3.0-liter 6G72 V6 engine in naturally aspirated (225 hp) or Twin Turbo (280 hp) configurations with full-time AWD and 4WS. Global production concluded in 2000.
