The first-generation Mercedes-Benz V-Class (chassis code W638) launched in 1996 as the passenger-focused luxury derivative of the W638 Vito commercial van. Designed as a spacious multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), it featured a front-wheel-drive layout with transversely mounted engines, sliding side doors, and configurable 6 to 7-passenger seating.

Engine options included 2.0-liter and 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines (V 200, V 230), a VR6 2.8-liter engine sourced from Volkswagen (V 280 with 174 hp), and OM611 common-rail turbodiesels (V 220 CDI). High-spec models offered rear air suspension for automatic leveling and plush leather upholstery. Production ceased in 2003 when the line was replaced by the Viano (W639).
