The first-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (chassis code W166) launched in early 2015 as the refreshed and rebranded continuation of the third-generation M-Class under Mercedes' updated naming scheme. Concurrently, Mercedes introduced the all-new GLE Coupe (internal code C292) to directly target fastback luxury crossovers. The update brought a restyled front fascia, LED Intelligent Light System, and upgraded interior electronics.

Powertrain choices included 2.1-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesels (GLE 250 d, GLE 350 d), biturbo V6 and V8 gasoline engines (GLE 400, GLE 500), and the GLE 500 e plug-in hybrid. High-performance Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 variants utilized a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 outputting up to 585 hp. Most models mated to the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic paired with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and optional AIRMATIC air suspension.
