About this generation

Second generation of the full-size luxury SUV Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (X166), produced from 2012 to 2015 before being rebranded as the GLS-Class.

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (chassis code X166) debuted at the 2012 New York Auto Show. Up to 100 kg lighter than its predecessor through extensive use of aluminum hood and fender stampings, the X166 offered enhanced fuel efficiency, reduced wind noise, and superior ride comfort. Standard equipment encompassed three-row seating, AIRMATIC air suspension, and novel driver aids like Crosswind Assist.

Powertrains comprised the GL 350 BlueTEC 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel and biturbo 4.7-liter V8 gasoline units powering the GL 450 and GL 500/550. This generation also introduced the high-performance GL 63 AMG equipped with a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 outputting 557 hp. In late 2015, a mid-cycle facelift accompanied the vehicle's renaming to the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class.

Mercedes-Benz Introduces 1.5-Liter M 252 LS Engine With Electric Turbocharger for the GLB 250

Mercedes-Benz is bringing its Formula 1-derived electric turbocharging technology to standard models with the new 1.5-liter M 252 LS four-cylinder engine, debuting in the GLB 250 crossover. The unit produces 228 horsepower plus 31 hp from the electric turbo system while cutting CO2 emissions by about 17 percent compared to the previous 2.0-liter M 260 engine.

2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC400 EV achieves 356-mile highway range and 3.7-second 0–60 mph in instrumented test

Instrumented testing of the 483-hp dual-motor 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC400 4Matic EV recorded a 0–60 mph sprint of 3.7 seconds and a 70-mph highway range of 356 miles from its 94.0-kWh battery, surpassing its 350-mile EPA rating. Equipped with air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and a 39.1-inch Hyperscreen, the tested vehicle carried an as-tested price of $85,450.

Mercedes-AMG Develops Next C63 With Both Gasoline and Electric Powertrains

Mercedes-Benz CTO Jörg Burzer confirmed that Affalterbach is developing both internal combustion and battery-electric powertrains for future 63-badged models as the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid C63 exits production. In the meantime, an interim C53 featuring a 443-hp 3.0-liter inline-six engine is expected to take its place.

2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 Clocks 4.1-Second 0–60 MPH Time in First Track Test

Replacing the four-cylinder GLC43 and GLC63 models, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 4Matic+ pairs a 443-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with all-wheel drive and rear-axle steering. In instrumented testing, the SUV hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and outperformed the BMW X3 M50 xDrive and Audi SQ5 on the figure-eight course and in braking.
