The first-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class, internally designated as W168, debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 1997, marking the luxury brand's historic entry into the subcompact city car segment. The engineering highlight of the W168 was its patented Sandwich floor construction, which directed the engine and transmission beneath the passenger floor pan during a frontal collision rather than into the cabin. Offered primarily as a five-door hatchback, the model lineup expanded in 2001 to include a long-wheelbase variant (V168) that added 170 millimeters of rear legroom. Its tall monovolume body profile offered exceptional outward visibility and versatile interior seating configurations.

Powertrain choices comprised M166 inline-four gasoline engines ranging from 1.4 to 2.1 liters (A 140, A 160, A 190, and the flagship A 210 EVO) alongside 1.7-liter OM668 Common Rail turbo-diesels. Transmissions included a five-speed manual, an automated clutchless manual, or a five-speed torque-converter automatic. Following early evasive maneuver tests in 1997, Mercedes-Benz made the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) standard equipment across all trim levels and retuned the chassis suspension. A mid-cycle refresh in 2001 updated exterior bumpers, lighting elements, and interior materials before production concluded in 2004.
